I've never underestimated parents. I know exactly what they're capable of. They put televisions, computers, nintendos, and high dollar sound systems in their children's bedrooms (or in the back of their SUVs.) Then when their children fail in school the parents remove the televisions, computers, nintendos, and high dollar sound systems from their children's bedrooms. "We've taken everything away from junior because he failed his classes," they tell me. They say this like they deserve a parental medal of honor or something. I respond, "Well, that's fine, but are you now helping him with his school work, because it sure looks like he could use it?"
When parents fill the child's room up with distractions, they're hoping that this will pacify the child and keep them out of their hair. But that parental responsibility never really goes away, although many wish it would. Ultimately Dr. Pughsley is not responsible for your little baby. It's you.
This is my last post.
I'm a guidance counselor at a successful high school outside CMS and I have 20 years experience. I've attempted to provide a counterpoint to this website in hopes that it would generate productive discussion. It seems that those who frequent this website are not really wanting to generate a positive dialoge. I've been called a "troll" by the guy who maintains the website. I've been mocked, put down, and told I make too much money by the folks who respond.
I expected and even hoped for disagreement. I didn't anticipate the immature and personal attacks.
I will now leave you to your website. I hope CMS will be dumped or saved or whatever it is you really want. Ultimately I hope your children will be saved, whether it is by you or a government agency, because we all have a vested interest in that. Good luck.
Very proud to say that I always wanted to design a bumpersticker and now I can say that I have. I also heard through the grapevine that two people with those bumperstickers got speeding tickets this past week. Hmmm..
I know that a lot of you don't get the Charlotte Observer so I will write the letter that was published today in the editorial section. They printed it word for word. Yea!
NORTH COUNTY PARENTS PORTRAYED UNFAIRLY
In response to "Outsiders taking inside look at running CMS":
When middle-ring parents talk openly about securing an excellent public education for their kids, no one levels charges of racism or hints at a hidden agenda. But let a north county parent state those same desires and suddenly we are all elitists who have no concern for the common good. Such hostility shows that we are already very much a divided school district. We seek only to formalize what we believe has already taken place. Forgive us if we are sick of trying to force CMS to yet another table. It is not that we have lost the will to fight, but rather that we have lost the will to fight CMS.

I saw your letter in the paper. I think I hear a rally cry!
(sheepishly) I picked up the paper at a news box. I was going to post it here, glad you got to it first.

It was me that questioned if you were acting a bit like a troll. I didn't start a forum to only allow posts from people who agree with me. When you joined and chose your name you expected to be the opposition. Your early posts were venomous towards parents that are very worried about their children. That is what people questioned.
Consider coming back with another posting id so people here your message, not anger. Oh wait! Changing your handle so people actually hear the message is such a cop out!

I feel sorry for the kids who have you as their counselor. You sound like you hate and resent the kids and the parents that come to you. It's almost like you are upset that these parents care for their kids as much as they do.
I wouldn't be surprised if you work for CMS. As far as putting you down.
All I can say is that people are coming here with real problems and you are putting them down. We aren't going to tolerate that. Many of these problems are systematic and real, whether you chose to believe it or not.

BAHAHAHAHA.... Right, I have a huge system in the car I don't have, and a stereo in the room that is already crowded by books and Flying manuals, which are kept right next to the TV I don't own, which is hooked to the Nintendo I never had.
And the computer I'm currently replying on, is shared between my sister and I.
And it's a three year old piece of crap.
I live in North Mecklenburg, yes. In Cornelius, down the street from the Peninsula, wedged in between two coves. My parents treat me like any other teenager would be treated. I earn everything, everything I own is mine. I'm a senior at Hopewell.
Quit stereotyping. Don't let the door hit you in the arse on your way out.

You could not have summed it up better. That is exactly what the principals, teachers, couselors, elected board members and staff do at CMS, they sterotype our children. That is one of their ultimate problem. They especially have problems with out-of-state children. Believe me, I've been through it all, the CMS staff and elected officals back each other. If you feel your children rights are being violated and want to change the way CMS does things, take your complaints to a higher level, appealing to the CMS board will do you no good (again they back their staff decisions). Contact the US Department of Education (various departments depending on your issues), they will listen to you, communicate with you and investigate the CMS system for you. CMS is obviously too large, out of control, afraid to handle the diversity, and they abuse their authority. We seriously need a new school system with a staff who knows how to handle diversity.
